Rudy Chen was born on December 15, 2003, in Guatemala. He was abandoned at birth by his mother and tossed from place to place until he was seven years old.
Rudy was three years old when Pastor Mike Megginson visited his small, remote village of Rio Negro, which is located in a mountainous area of Guatemala. Mike formed a special bond with Rudy and from that point, Rudy was a part of Mike's family. During Rudy's early life, he was malnourished and very sickly. When he was eight years old, he went to live with an American missionary, Mary Purvis, who serves in Guatemala full-time. When Rudy was twelve, he and his sister, Belsy, moved to Costa Rica to live with Pastor Mike and his wife, Sally, who were serving as missionaries in Costa Rica at the time.
Rudy was adored by both families and given many opportunities of which most young boys from Guatemala never experience. In 2013 and 2014, he was fortunate enough to be granted a Visa to visit the United States for a month each time.
When he moved to Costa Rica, Rudy was twelve years old. Wherever he was sent, he adapted to life very easily and quickly. It was no different in Costa Rica. He loved soccer and when others saw his love for the game, he was invited to play on a men's team. He was always friendly and loved to make people laugh.
At the conclusion of one year in Costa Rica, Rudy and his sister returned to Guatemala for a short break. He later chose to live with his family in Guatemala City instead of returning to Costa Rica for a second year with the Megginson's. Tragically, on April 7, 2017, he was shot and killed while simply laying in his bed watching television.
In an effort to turn evil into good, Rudy's Hands has been formed to help children in dangerous and underprivileged areas. Rudy’s Hands is a non-profit organization with the desire to raise funds to help widows, orphans and the most vulnerable in underprivileged areas.
